A strong foundation sets you up for lasting progress.

STEP 2 - WHITE BELT

FUNDAMENTALS PROGRAMME

After completing the 5-week beginners course, students join our Fundamentals Programme, the main training phase for white belts. This stage helps reinforce essential techniques, build fitness for grappling, and develop confidence through controlled sparring in a supportive environment.

You'll train in Gi, No Gi, or both, depending on your goals. Our coaches will guide your progress all the way to blue belt, ensuring you're well-prepared for the intermediate-advanced programme.

Class types

GI

Gi is the traditional style of Jiu Jitsu, practised in a uniform that includes a jacket, trousers and belt. Opponents are allowed to grip both their own and their partner’s uniform to take down, pass, sweep and submit. Certain submissions — like twisting leg locks that apply pressure to the knee — are not allowed.

It’s typically a slower, more technical form of grappling. Mistakes are punished more readily in the gi due to the friction of the uniform and the ability to grip and hold positions. For this reason, students who start in the gi often develop exceptionally strong, hard-to-pass guards.

NO GI

No-Gi is the more modern style of Jiu Jitsu. It’s practiced in a rash guard and shorts or leggings, with no gripping of clothing allowed. Twisting leg locks that apply pressure to the knee — such as heel hooks and Aoki locks — are permitted and have revolutionised the sport in the last decade.

No-Gi is faster, more free-flowing, and places a greater emphasis on athleticism, body control, and traditional wrestling positions. It makes up 50% of the adult curriculum at MGA, and is taught from the beginner level all the way through to advanced competition training.
