MGA sessions
Gi
The traditional style of Jiu Jitsu, trained in a jacket, trousers and belt. Gi grips allow control, sweeps and submissions, while certain leg locks are restricted. It’s slower and more technical, with friction and grips forcing precision. Students who start in the gi often develop strong, hard-to-pass guards.
NO GI
The modern style, trained in a rash guard and shorts or leggings. There are no grips on clothing, and twisting leg locks like heel hooks are allowed. This change has reshaped the sport in the last decade. No Gi is faster and more free-flowing, with emphasis on wrestling, body control and athleticism.
OPEN MATS
Unstructured training time in Gi or No Gi. Practise techniques, spar freely, and learn from different training partners at your own pace in a relaxed setting.

All Access classes run for 1 hour and include technique, positional rounds/games, and free sparring. From Monday to Thursday evenings at 8pm, we add a 30-minute open mat for extra sparring. Saturday classes follow the same format, with a 1.5-hour open mat after the Gi session.

Life happens. If you’re late, just warm up quickly and jump in. You’re an adult and you’ll always be treated that way at MGA.
-
Yes. All Access classes include students from white to black belt, giving beginners the chance to train with and learn directly from those further along the journey.
-
Yes, but not in the classes they’re teaching. Coaches take a student-first approach when running sessions, focusing on coaching and mentoring during drills and sparring. Outside those times, you’ll find them training in other classes or at our regular open mats, where you can always ask for a round.

We grade each student individually. Age, goals, physical ability, consistency, and attitude all matter - but the core is technical proficiency and being able to apply your skills in live training. We hold formal grading days every 6 months, where belts are awarded to those who are ready.
