GRAPPLING EXPERIENCE:

Tim is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt with over two decades of experience in adult education and coaching. His martial arts journey began in 2004 with judo and Japanese Jiu Jitsu during his university years, before moving to Australia in 2011 and discovering BJJ. Since then, he has trained and competed on national and international stages, earning a reputation for helping people develop their skills through technical precision and an evidence‑based approach that enables athletes to train smarter, reduce injury risk, and perform at their best. Culminating in the award of his black belt in 2023 from long‑time coach Lachlan Giles.

Holding postgraduate degrees in Sports & Exercise Medicine and Teaching & Learning, Tim works in the university sector as an educator and researcher, where he is completing a PhD in pain and physical activity. His research into musculoskeletal pain and rehabilitation shapes his coaching, blending academic insight with practical experience to create classes that are clear, engaging, and adaptable to every student’s needs.

Beyond the mats, Tim has worked with thousands of grapplers on injury prevention and recovery through his sports rehabilitation work. When he’s not coaching or teaching, Tim is outnumbered at home by his wife and two young daughters - his most relentless (and honest) coaches - who continue to teach him patience, adaptability, and the value of keeping things fun under pressure.
